A First Craft Cupboard for a Five-Year-Old

The shortest list that still covers most of what a small child will want to make, and nothing that will sit unopened.

Start With Four Things

A first cupboard needs a surface, something that colors, something that sticks and something with texture. In practice that is a stack of poster board, a set of washable markers, a glue stick, and a bag of pipe cleaners and pom poms. Everything else is an expansion pack.

Resist the urge to add scissors-heavy materials on day one. At five, most of the enjoyment is in arranging and sticking rather than cutting, and a cupboard that depends on neat cuts will frustrate before it delights.

Pick Tools Sized for the Hand

Jumbo and triangle brushes exist because a five-year-old holds a brush in a fist. A triangular barrel nudges the fingers into position without anybody having to give a lesson, and the thicker handle is simply easier to control.

Dot markers do the same job for color. They put a clean circle of paint on paper with a press, which removes the two hardest parts of painting at that age: loading the brush and controlling the tip.

Add Wiggle Eyes and Watch What Happens

A bag of wiggle eyes is the cheapest transformation on the table. A folded sheet of foam is a folded sheet of foam until it has eyes, at which point it is a character with a name and a backstory, and the project continues for another forty minutes.

Keep them in the caddy rather than the cupboard. They are the thing you want to be able to hand over at exactly the right moment.

Keep One Kit in Reserve

However good the cupboard is, there will be days when nobody can decide what to make. One boxed kit on a high shelf solves that afternoon completely, because the deciding has already been done by somebody else.

Choose one with a physical result — a ceramic bank, a small canvas, a sticker book. At five, the satisfying part is having made a thing that exists afterwards, and a kit that produces an object beats one that produces a page.

Washable markers, dot markers, brushes in four shapes, finger paint trays and glitter glue by the dozen.

Everything-in-the-box projects: ceramic banks, melty beads, canvas painting, sticker books, art totes and color-in puzzles.
